CB 172 is a tripartate ,mountain retreat of momentous splendour. When driving past, one barely notices its size and scope, it is a design so well incorporated into the mountains natural textures. Anandi and Blake are the proud owners of this masterpiece, and proud they should be. Steep ascending stairs lead one to either of the three levels of the villa. The signature trademark of the homes architecture is its ability to be either transformed into three, separate apartments(comfortably sleeping around 4-6 people in each) or main home and a guest story, each has its own saltwater pool or jacuzzi, or as one; triple-story villa that interconnects itself to every level. This genius design is the work of architect Le Roux Basson. He has combined the natural elements and colours of the mountains surface with Balau Timber, Caesar-stone, Travertine Tiling, Stainless-steel and various other types of wood.
The villa is designed to be phenomenally environmentally-resourceful. Through irrigation features, the water and electrical plant-watering systems have been consciously altered to be of as little depletion to the environment as possible. A 5000 litre water-tank filled with rain-water allows for the constant recycling of water throughout the homes outdoor plumbing and outdoor irrigation systems. The outdoor irrigation is set to an electrical timer. Solar heating panels are built onto the topmost roof.
On the first level, the guest suite(or 1st story master suite - as you prefer it) opens up to a vast expanse of Balau timber decking. The alternative to a conventional garden and grass lawn, it has been created in light of the elevated structure of the house. Having an actual garden requires for there to be a level of the house built on the actual grounds surface. Here, the ground level forms the garage/storage rooms of the building, so the genius alternative was to create a stunning Zen-Garden on the first level exterior. The Zen-Garden is a labyrinth of astroturf grass, rock-pool pebbles , cacti-plants and quartz-crystal boulders. A beautiful plunge-pool is accessed by three timber steps, each fitted with small;fluorescent spot-lights. This pool as well as the pool on the higher level, is magically transformed in the night-time. Through cleverly picked neon-blue fibre-glass lining and ultra-violet type lighting under water, the effect becomes a glowing gem .The second floor pool is heated. Additionally, a jacuzzi sits nearby.
The 1st floor apartment is big enough to sleep 4, with one king-sized bed and a double-sleeper couch in the lounge. It comes equipped with a fully-stocked kitchen, including every top of the range appliance. The lounge has a large LCD TV screen, DVD player, I-pod docking station and CD-player. The bedroom comes with a king sized bed, ample closet space and an en-suite bathroom. The apartments colour-scheme keeps to the overall theme of peace and tranquility. Clean whites, aquamarine blues, sea-greens and suede-browns dominate and the added embellishments of green and blue mosaic, glass tiles compliment the sea-side concept beautifully. Raw-silk curtains populate every glass door frame throughout the entire villa. On display are three original Ian Van Zyl works. They are from his African wildlife collection of acrylics on canvas.
Gaining access to the second level, one climbs the steep stone stairs on the perimeter of the property, once again. This much larger area is opened up in a high, vaulted ceiling, multi-level space. The kitchen is an open-planned entertainment feature. It sports an island with bar stools which can be transformed into a casual dining space or a work surface. All the units are finished with Caesar-stone tops and the entire kitchen is kitted with the latest technology in cooking and refrigeration-related appliances. The rear extends to a scullery, pantry and laundry-room; as well as there being a back exit allowing additional stairway access to the third story. In the centre entrance-hall opening, an elevated section accommodates a huge, glass dining table surrounded by chairs upholstered in Afrosilk and faux snake-skin. A lower level within the same kitchen/dining/living space, is separated via a few steps. It sports an enormous stone -pebble ,gas fireplace and leather lounge furniture. The extremely long glass, sliding doors are doubled by American-Shutters. These are made with wooden slatted blinds, enabling them to open and close according to the amount of sunlight one wishes to allow inside. Again, the regulatory LCD screen TV, DVD, CD-player and i-pod station forms the entertainment corner. A second, exceptionally wide, Balau-timber decked patio forms this levels exterior, leading to a heated rim-flow pool. Furnished with a Teracotta-mosaic sunset-dining table and wooden patio furniture; it equates to the ideal for a setup of opulent Summer evenings of decadent dinner parties. A gas barbecue is available to cater for alfresco, relaxed, outdoor entertaining. Even more spectacular, is the view from this level. One literally sees the most unblocked sight of every area of the coast, spanning all the way from The Twelve Apostles, right up to Lions Head. With the inclusion of Signal Hill and Robben Island, one is spoiled for choice as to which natural wonder to contemplate.
Entering any of the three bedroom suites of this floor is allowed through the glass-sliding doors along the entire, rear perimeter of the deck. All three rooms have an individual glass door allowing balcony access. The three suited are sized in a small/medium/large sequence. The second being slightly larger than the first, but yet identical in that both keep the same decorative theme. Themes include; textured wall-paper, tweed-upholstered chairs and lots of raw silk. Muted, beach tones compliment the suggested retreat-orientated environment. The unique twist, however, comes in the form of scattered splashes of intense colours in the occassional cushion or painting.
The two suites share an external bathroom. Travertine tiling and porcelain create the wall-to-wall surfaces and all other features have been designed to cater to pure indulgence. A jacuzzi-bathtub, huge; frame less and seamless shower and double wash basins are built in amongst the bathrooms very mirrored and mosiac walls. The third bedroom could, if this was an individually rented level, bee seen as the master suite. It comes complete with a kitchenette, a lounge with a double sleeper-couch and en-suite bathroom; and is essentially similar in size and design to the first-floor apartment.
The topmost story is accessed via a grand staircase that can be closed off with sound-proofed sliding doors. A beautiful feature added to this high ceiling home, is the way in which the lighting in the house has been incorporated into intricate, tiara-style chandeliers; made solely of crystal and sterling silver. Walking up the stairs a original artwork of Daniella Herzsprung is on display. Upstairs, one is lead into an open-planned bar area that is conveniently fitted with two wine fridges and a beer fridge and is invariably more geared toward ultimate entertainment. Light marbled Caeser-stone and mahogany finishing are the primary materials here. As with all others, this kitchen is again equipped with all the appliance necessities as well as a rear scullery, pantry and laundry room. The focal point contributing the areas enormous feeling, is the addition of picture frame glass panels, inserted into the highest parts of the walls. These clear glass rectangles look like photo-realistic paintings depicting mountain-landscapes. On closer inspection, one actually realizes that what one really sees are the various sized peaks of the Table Mountain range. A main, centre glass skylight also accentuates the Balau Pergola ceiling and allows streams of the suns brilliant rays to dot the floor. A rich, mahogany dining table and an L-shaped, extended Kudu-leather couch furnish the living-room. More shuttered-sliding doors allow one to exit out onto a simply vast third-level patio. This is truly the king of all decks amongst the entire collection of decks-with-awesome-views in all of the Cape. More Balau timber here, reclining sun-bathing furniture, another comfy assortment of outdoor lounge couches, and an outdoor dining assemble populate the exteriors wide expanse. The highlight that evokes the most excitement of all, however, are the three, short step that take one to an elevated hot-tub on the summit of this castle-top.The jacuzzi in question sits squarely perched on a raised, tiered, wooden base and is so high up that when one turns ones head in 180 degree angles; there is nothing to see above or below the eye line except for mountains, beaches, ships and the horizon.
This level has an additional three bedrooms, sleeping a total of six and a separate study. The study is fitted with a mahogany desk unit, P.C, wireless internet use, and all other features necessary for conducting business whilst travelling. The two smaller bedrooms, though still as large as most villas master-guest suites, have extraordinarily high ceilings and vast closet-space. Again, deck-access is allowed through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors. More Ian Van Zyl acrylics on canvas dominate the textured; wallpapered walls. These rooms have generated a more African-inspired environment through their rough textured embellishments and furniture upholstery. Neutral, earthy colours add a tranquility and outdoor element throughout. The penthouse-suite style master bedroom is the most luxuriously, decadent of all. An enormous silvery-suede chaise-lounge overlooks the ocean. More picture frame, clear-glass panels are inserted in sections of the top sections of walls and a massive and transparent skylight dominates the ceiling. The King-sized bed, walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom make up the balance of the rooms contents. The rooms use of colour revolves around pearl-tones, black, silver and white; creating an African-influenced ,zebra-print atmosphere. The bathroom holds an elevated, Victorian, free-standing tub that is designed to fit two people. The rest of the space is finished in exquisite Caesar-Stone, glass mosaics and more Travertine tiling. A noteworthy feature throughout the homes bathrooms is the heating in all of the towel-racks and the under-floor heating system.
This is one of those magnificent retreats that has so lovingly been created with peace and tranquility in mind. The convenience of having the choice of three separate homes, or one; enormous villa is so masterfully executed that these aspects are entirely indistinguishable from the villas outside view. The villa remains the most premier holiday choice when having the dual intention of privacy and entertaining in mind.
